The Madang Urban Local Level Government (MULLG) Christmas Yard Competition has officially concluded, with winners from all ten wards receiving their prizes yesterday.The competition, which ran throughout the Christmas festive season, aimed to encourage creativity and promote the true spirit of Christmas through decorative home yards within the MULLG area.Best decorated yards from Ward One to Ward Ten were selected through a two-stage process. Ward councilors from each ward first identified outstanding yards, which were then assessed by appointed judges before final decisions were made.The Christmas Yard Competition was organized by the Madang Provincial Events Committee in partnership with the Madang Urban Local Level Government.Winners expressed surprise and excitement upon receiving their prizes.Angelica Takaili, who won first prize for Best Decorated Yard in Ward Two, thanked the Madang Provincial Events Committee for initiating the competition, saying it motivated residents to decorate their homes during the festive season.“This competition motivates all of us to decorate our yards and celebrate Christmas in its true spirit. I hope more people will take part this year,” she said.Meanwhile, Julie D. Ariako, the first prize winner for Ward Six, said her family’s efforts were well deserved, noting that decorating their yard has been a long-standing Christmas tradition.“This is not our first time decorating our yard. The Minister for Police, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr has confirmed that a joint security operation that was carried out in the Tsak Valley in Enga Province, was targeting illegal high-powered firearms that were posing serious threat to public safety and national security.In a recently released press statement, the Minister said the intelligence-led operation was conducted on January 2nd and involved Police and Defence personnel acting on information about the presence of factory-made military grade weapons within civilian communities. He said security forces encountered armed resistance during the operation, resulting in the fatal wounding of two suspects who were each armed with M16 assault rifles. One member of the security forces was also shot during the exchange and later received medical treatment. The officer is now recovering. The Minister expressed regret over the loss of life but emphasized that the presence of such weapons in civilian areas represents a grave and unacceptable risk to peace, safety, and national stability. He said military grade firearms have no place in Papua New Guinea society. According to the operational summary cleared for release, coordinated operations were carried out at two separate locations in Tsak Village during the early hours of the morning. At the first location, a suspect opened fire from inside a residence, wounding an officer. Security forces returned fire in what the Minister described as a proportionate response to an immediate threat. At the second location, another armed suspect was encountered and fatally wounded after posing what authorities assessed as a direct danger to personnel on the ground. Additional illegal firearms were recovered during the operation. Three other suspects were arrested and remained in lawful custody. They have since been transported to Mendi, where they are expected to face charges relating to illegal weapons possession and other criminal offences. The Minister said security personnel also came under sustained fire during their withdrawal from the area, with armed individuals positioned on higher ground deliberately obstructing exit routes. Reinforcements from the Papua New Guinea Defence Force were deployed to secure a safe extraction. Investigations are continuing to determine how the weapons entered the area and to identify networks involved in the trafficking and supply of illegal firearms. The Minister said the operation forms part of broader national efforts to disrupt the flow of weapons contributing to violence and instability. He commended the conduct of police and Defence personnel involved, stating they acted within established rules of engagement and in response to imminent threats to life. The Minister also called on leaders, commentators, and the public to act responsibly when discussing matters of national security, warning that unverified or misleading information could inflame tensions and undermine confidence in security institutions.

Despite the bad weather conditions, East New Britain Governor Michael Marum travelled to the Gazelle, Kokopo and Rabaul Districts on Sunday 4th January to offer provincial government support to the churches.The governor presented a sum of K40,000 to the Rausepna Catholic parish located inland of the Baining area.By noon, he headed to the Vunakabi Resettlement in Rabaul, where he presented K20,000 to the Tavana United Church. Their last stop was the Karavara United Church in Duke of York LLG, Kokopo district, where he presented a total of K20,000 of financial support for the maintenance for the church.The sole purpose for the governor’s hand of support is not only to help these churches improve their infrastructures by undergoing maintenance, but also as a show of gratitude for assisting in development and community building.A small yet warm gesture given to these churches helps strengthen faith and foster a better sense of community within the area.Father (Fr) Michael Dawai of the Rausepna Catholic Parish acknowledged the efforts of the governor and his team with their continuous support to churches within the province.He stated that the churches will continue to do their part in community development, peace and moral guidance.The Governor said, “The church remains a key partner in development. Police in the Central province managed to confiscate equipment for making home brew alcohol thanks to the support from the local community.The police raid took place at Sabusa with the members of the Central Command Quick Response Force (QRF), led by Team Leader Jonathan Ila. During the raid, police confiscated gas cylinders and other equipment used in the manufacture of the illicit brew. The raid was a positive start to 2026 in the Central Province. Building on that operation, the Hanua Maragi community held a meeting on Sunday 4th January, where young men voluntarily surrendered additional equipment used in the production of fire wara to police. The event was witnessed by Ward Councillor John Arua, community leaders, and officers from the Central Command QRF team. Addressing the gathering, Councillor Arua warned young people that new employment opportunities were expected in the area and those who continued to produce, sell, or consume illicit alcohol would miss out big time. He urged the youth to make responsible choices for their future and the wellbeing of their community. Youth representative Desmond Omai, who surrendered his equipment, said 2026 marked a turning point in his life. “This year is a year of change for me. I have given up my equipment to do something better in my life rather than destroying my future and disturbing the peace within the community,” he said. Police officials have stated that the security operation carried out in Tsak Valley in the Enga Province that strike public concern on social media, was the result of months of intelligence gathering and targeted planning. Acting Commissioner of Police Samson Kua said the operation was conducted under the Counter-Terrorism Act and led by Upper Highlands Special Operations units, with the specific objective of locating and apprehending suspects in possession of factory-made firearms believed to be used in tribal fighting and criminal activity. He said the Upper Highlands had been identified as a high-risk area due to the presence of armed groups capable of spreading fear and destabilizing communities. According to Acting Commissioner Kua, the operation commenced in the early hours of Friday, January 2nd, with security forces executing simultaneous raids at two separate locations in the Tsak Valley. He said at the first location, officers attempting entry were met with immediate and indiscriminate gunfire from inside the dwelling. One member of the security forces was shot and wounded during the initial exchange. Officers returned fire to suppress the threat, resulting in the armed suspect being shot dead. An M16 factory-made rifle and a loaded magazine were recovered from the scene. At the second location, Acting Commissioner Kua said security forces engaged another armed individual who was also shot and killed. A second M16 rifle with a loaded magazine was seized, along with a modified .38-calibre revolver and ammunition for both 7.62mm and 5.56mm calibers. Three additional suspects were arrested at the scene and remain in police custody. He said the operation concluded at approximately 6:30am, but security forces faced further danger while withdrawing from the village. Large trees were felled across three exit routes, power lines were brought down, and officers came under gunfire from armed tribesmen positioned on elevated ground as they attempted to clear the road. “Our members came under heavy fire from armed tribesmen positioned on the high ground and flanks while they were physically clearing the blocked road. A police vehicle was struck by gunfire, narrowly missing the driver,” Acting Commissioner Kua said. He said the convoy was able to extract after tactical manoeuvres and support from PNG Defence Force Bravo 2 Company, which advanced from the opposite end to secure the withdrawal corridor. The wounded officer was stabilized at the scene by an army medic and transported to hospital, where he was treated for pellet wounds and later discharged. Acting Commissioner Kua confirmed that the three detained suspects will undergo questioning and formal charging. A vehicle belonging to one of the suspects has also been impounded. He said intelligence indicated the seized M16 rifles were being used as “hired guns” to fuel tribal conflicts and support criminal activity. Serial numbers on the weapons will be traced to determine their origin. The Police Officials now urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid speculation, particularly on social media, noting that misinformation can undermine security operations.

A prominent landowner representative has congratulated ExxonMobil following the successful full retirement of the PNG LNG project debt. Mr. Martin Hora, Deputy Chairman and Public Officer of the Komo Airfield Landowners Association in Block 1787 of PDL 8, issued the remarks following Prime Minister James Marape’s recent announcement that the project had settled its bank-financed debt six months ahead of schedule.With the debt now cleared, Mr. Hora is calling on the National Government, through the Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC) and the Department of Petroleum and Energy (DPE), to prioritize the opening of clan accounts. He emphasized that many landowners have struggled for years to obtain Incorporated Land Group (ILG) certificates and titles at their own expense. Since the initial stages of the project in 2009 up until 2026, these clans have worked consistently to meet state identification requirements despite significant administrative hurdles. Furthermore, Mr. Hora pointed out that under Sections 47 and 63 of the Oil and Gas Act 1998, the developer typically holds the prerogative to undertake social mapping and landowner identification studies. He noted that while these studies should assist communities in the project's proximity with ILG registration, many landowners were left to manage the process themselves. Despite these setbacks and various challenges, he maintained that landowning groups have remained peaceful and have complied with all state requirements to finally register their groups. In his concluding remarks, Mr. Hora urged the MRDC and DPE to move forward by verifying clans on an individual basis. He argued that the authorities should settle the accounts for those who have met all legal requirements rather than allowing the internal issues of one or two clans to delay the opening of accounts for everyone else.

A three-day soccer tournament featuring 13 teams concluded on December 31st, 2025, in Kaparoko village, Rigo District, marking the end of the sporting year for Central Province.The annual tournament which began on Monday, December 29th, 2025, was organized to raise funds in support of student pastors and ordained pastors who returned to the village for the holiday period. Funds raised will help them prepare to return to their respective United Church circuits and theological colleges to continue their studies and ministry work. The event also formed part of Kaparoko’s festive season celebrations. The tournament attracted strong competition, featuring several PNG National Representatives and National Premier League (NPL) players who hail from Kaparoko, a small fishing village and the home of the Koupa Soccer Association. PNG women’s national players Phylis Pala, Anasta Gunemba Kila, and Kila Dou took part in the tournament, alongside Premier Soccer League (PSL) players from reigning champions Gulf Komara, including Ezekiel Vela, Ronald Reggy, Geno Clement, and Karo Kila. Other notable players included Stanley Karo of Kula FC, Wally David of Highlands United, and Kule Lesly of Hekari United FC. Players from the PNG U18 Men’s National Youth team and Central Amoana FC also participated. The teams were led by PNG’s renowned striking legend, Rev. Kema Jack. Meanwhile, a children’s soccer festival for boys and girls aged 6 to 12 is scheduled to run from Thursday, January 1 to Saturday, January 3, 2026, continuing the village’s commitment to grassroots football development.
