SBBF stated that 6 differently abled (DA) team members including Helen Wemin who has a hearing and speech impairment were employed with the assistance of Cheshire DisAbility Services (CDS).
“Since Helen’s commencement, we’ve had over 100 of our Port Moresby-based team members gain access to basic Sign Language training.”
The program, which is designed to meet BBG's specific requirements, consisted of 12 sessions taught by Marlyn Wini, the program manager for Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP), and her team.
“It covers topics that help our TMs effectively communicate with Helen and provide outstanding customer service to our DA customers who visit our retail stores.”
“In addition to teaching our team members sign language, BbP's training program includes a sensitivity awareness workshop that teaches them about various abilities and how to engage and communicate with others, particularly those who have speech and hearing impairments.”
“We are extremely proud of our team who have embraced the program and will be better equipped to communicate with our fellow Papua New Guineans, and we anticipate the Sign Language training to be expanded to other Brian Bell Group businesses right across Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the next few years.”
“Since sign language is the fourth most widely spoken language in Papua New Guinea (PNG), it is essential to the personal and professional development of those with disabilities.”

TEACHER EXPO & LAUNCH OF “DIPLOMA IN TEACHING PRIMARY”
The Teacher’s Expo which started yesterday, Thursday 19th September launched the ‘Diploma in Teaching Primary’.
Australian Minister for International Development and Pacific Pat Conroy, who was present at the Expo explained this newest milestone in education.
“This Diploma in Teaching Primary course we are launching today will help upskill elementary teachers right across the country.”
“It can be rolled out by any teacher training provider in PNG.”
He further stated that Australia will help in supporting the upskilling of teachers in PNG.
“In addition to supporting the development of the diploma, I am pleased to announce that Australia will fund the first 400 teachers through this course.”
Conroy also praised the impact and contribution teachers made on the lives of their students.
“Teachers are some of the most selfless, knowledgeable, generous and kindest people I know.”
“They’re up early getting class ready, staying up late marking homework, checking in to make sure our kids are safe in the playground.”
“There’s a reason why kids – especially young kids – make that mistake of sometimes accidentally calling their teacher ‘Mum’.”
"It’s because outside of their immediate family, teachers are among the most valuable people in a child’s life, and they can completely change a child’s life.”
He urged the involvement of every person in order to make further development of education in PNG successful.
“We must all work together if we are going to upskill many thousands more.”
“That means national and provincial governments, donor partners, civil society, and the private sector—all working in lockstep on education.”
“Making sure that education departments, authorities and institutions are funded and adequately resourced; that teachers and educators have the right skills to teach, in order for all children to have the means —and opportunity—to learn.”
“And I implore you to continue this very important conversation, so we can support as many teachers as possible in obtaining the training and qualifications they need to deliver quality education to our children.”

TIME OUT FOR MARRIAGE
It all began with a request for legalization of a customary marriage made by a couple from the Tokarara Christian Fellowship.
Following their first meeting, Dr. Julian R. Kivori, the Center Director for Ellel Ministries PNG and Lead Pastor of Tokarara Christian Fellowship (TCF), recommended that they attend a series of marriage seminars prior to their official signing ceremony.
Time Out for Marriage, a marriage education series, was born out of this.
Dr. Kivori stated in the event flyer that as marriages and families face challenges, storms, and brokenness, there is a great need for healing, restoration, and a rebuilding of godly values and foundation in today's society.
Time Out for Marriage course, which used a healing, restoration, and deliverance approach, included weekly activities and exercises designed especially for couples and covered topics such as God's plan for marriage, the impact of past trauma both before and after marriage, how to express emotions, build trust, have a talk about sex, and hope for the future.
Just 46 of the 56 couples who reserved a spot for the course actually paid the tuition. Only 41 of the 46 couples finished the course, and on September 7, 2024, at Tokarara Christian Fellowship, Koura Way, 15 of those couples had their traditional marriages formally recognized.
The oldest couple had been customarily married for more than 33 years, while the youngest had been customarily married for more than two years.
Pastor Julian said apart from the Civil Registry marriage requirements, couples from other denominations were required to provide a consent letter from their church leadership approving their customary marriage to be solemnized by a Baptist minister.
In this way, the interdenominational relationships were maintained while ministering to the need of the wider Body of Christ for couples who were married by custom.
At the end of the Marriage Papers Signing Ceremony, the TCF congregational Chairman, Ganjiki Wayne, cited the legal implications of a lawful marriage.
As a practicing lawyer, Wayne explained that the term “lawful” husband or wife was a loaded term denoting not just a romantic relationship but a legal one.
He said that the seriousness or sacredness of a legal relationship was found in its termination or “exit clauses”.
“In marriage, there are two modes of termination: Death and Divorce.”
“Once a spouse dies, the marriage has ended. But divorce is complicated. God says He hates divorce.”
“So, when marriage was created by law, State followed God’s attitude and made divorce extremely difficult and cumbersome.”
“Therefore, entering into a relationship that has very serious exit clauses is a serious decision.”
Wayne said that the “exit clauses” for de facto relationships or even customary marriages were not as difficult and complicated as legal marriage.
He concluded that it takes a real man and a real woman to make this decision.
Meiva Lalatute, a participant of the course, expressed her gratitude.
“As the days are approaching, I feel so thankful for all the teaching during the course.”
“I never thought this day would come for me to make it right before the Lord. I know and believe that this ceremony will come with the blessings that I’ve been waiting for so long.”
“Thank you so much TCF and Elle Ministries. We’re truly blessed by your act of kindness from the start of the course till the end today.”
“What an amazing journey, it came straight from the heart with so much love and kindness shown.”

PACIFIC NATIONS SHINE AT THE PARIS 2024 PARALYMPIC GAMES: A LEGACY OF SUCCESS AND SOCIAL IMPACT
Pacific nations enjoyed unparalleled triumph at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with the world's best Paralympians demonstrating resilience, talent, and the region's indomitable spirit.
From Oceania record performances to personal and seasonal bests for some Pacific Island nations, the 2024 Games were a watershed moment in the region's Paralympic history.
Paralympians from 168 National Paralympic Committees, including the Paralympic Refugee Team.
Included six Pacific nations: Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Tonga, and Vanuatu.
These Pacific nations made an impression on the world scene, competing strongly in Para athletics and Para taekwondo.
The Paralympians' outstanding performances have inspired millions both within their home nations and globally.
The sense of pride and unity across the Pacific has never been stronger.
Excitingly, Kiribati made a debut appearance attending their first Paralympic Games ever.
Kiribati’s Chef de Mission, Fakaofo Kekeang expressed pride over their first paralympic participation.
“It’s a special moment and we are very proud to travel this long trip from our country to Paris.”
Ongiou Timeon made history as Kiribati’s first-ever competitor at the Paralympic Games, stepping straight into the finals of the Men’s F11 Shot Put.
Para athletics saw one Oceania Record, four Personal Bests, and two Seasonal Bests set in the Stade de France, as well as remarkable performances in Para taekwondo at the beautiful Grand Palais.
Before the Games began, the Oceania Paralympic Committee (OPC) brought together teams from Vanuatu, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand for a special Welcome Event in the Paralympic Village.
Officials attending the event were Australia's Governor General, Her Excellency Sam Mostyn AC, and Anika Wells, the Federal Minister for Sport.
These nations have never staged a welcoming occasion before. It was also the first time that all of the Oceania nations were housed together in the Paralympic Village.
Despite the physical and logistical problems that Pacific islands frequently confront, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games saw the most Pacific Paralympians ever, with a 13-strong presence surpassing the previous record of 11 athletes set at the Sydney Paralympics in 2000.
It also had the highest representation of women, including players, coaches, and administrators.
Three of the national Chefs de Mission and seven of the athletes were female.
As the Paralympians return home, their achievements will have far-reaching consequences beyond the sports stadium and the taekwondo mat.
Their achievement provides a tremendous platform for advancing social change throughout the Pacific.
The athletes are committed to use their platform to raise awareness about the significance of disability rights, accessibility, and inclusion.
Many of the returning Paralympians have expressed their desire to become advocates and leaders in their communities, pushing for better infrastructure, access to education, and opportunities for disabled people.
As the National Paralympic Committees and their National Sports Organisation members look ahead to LA28 and Brisbane 2032, they will advocate for increased government and public support for disability inclusion initiatives to ensure that the Paralympic Games' legacy lives on long after the closing ceremony.
The Pacific nations' achievement at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games is only the beginning.
With greater funding in Para sport, improved visibility for impaired athletes, and a strong commitment to social impact, the region is well-positioned for future international success.
The emphasis now is to capitalizing on this momentum, ensuring that the 2024 Games' legacy brings real and long-term change back home.
For the Pacific, these Games have been more than just a showcase of sporting excellence; they are a catalyst for a more inclusive and accessible society for all.

MARAPE THANKS COALITION PARTNERS AHEAD OF CRUCIAL VONC
Prime Minister James Marape thanked the Coalition Partners for their consistent support ahead of today's Vote of No Confidence (VONC) in the National Parliament yesterday, officially acknowledging the critical support of numerous prominent political leaders and their parties.
He extended his thanks to the United Resources Party (URP) and its Leader William Duma, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and its Leader Powes Parkop, People’s First Party (PFP) and its Leader Richard Maru, People’s Party (PP) and its Leader Sir Peter Ipatas, the National Alliance and its Leader Walter Schnaubelt, PNG Party and its Leader Belden Namah, People’s Movement for Change and its Leader Garry Juffa, Melanesian Liberal Party and its leader Dr Allan Marat, and Melanesian Alliance Party Joseph Yopyyopy.
The Prime Minister emphasized the coalition government's strength, which includes his party's 48 members of parliament (MPs) and an extra 29 MPs from the Coalition Partners.
This unity provides the government a strong total of 77 MPs as it prepares for tomorrow's VONC, establishing a firm foundation of support that Prime Minister Marape claims will take them through this era of political instability.
"I thank all these Coalition Partners for their continuous support since this VONC drama started earlier this year,"
"Their patriotism and passion to our government and our shared goal for the country have never wavered.
“This week, unlike in many other political crises, we did not constrain or pressure our leaders.”
“I have enormous regard for their freedom, allowing them to come and go without compulsion, intimidation, or influence - acting solely on their own free will and decision."
"Last week, as soon as the VONC was lodged, I notified them that they could make their own decisions.”
"To date, we have not lost a single MP to the Opposition, which demonstrates that the trust I placed in them has been fully reciprocated."
"I am pleased to see that politics in Papua New Guinea is maturing."
"Tomorrow, leaders will have two options: Rainbo Paita or James Marape."
Their decision will reflect the workings of our democracy.
Despite the fact that the VONC has sparked conjecture and concern across Papua New Guinea's political spectrum since its inception, Prime Minister Marape remains sure that his government will emerge stronger, with the unwavering backing of his coalition partners.
"After we get over the VONC, Pangu and all Coalition partners will get together, and chart a course for the journey into our 50th anniversary next year and beyond."
The Prime Minister also underlined the need of coalition members working together for Papua New Guinea's future as the country approaches its 50th anniversary of independence in 2025.
The government, he said, will focus on key development agendas, economic recovery, and strengthening national unity, all of which are necessary to lead Papua New Guinea into a brighter future.
“With just hours remaining before the vote, my team is prepared to weather the storm and continue serving the country and leading PNG to be economically independent.”
