The government, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance, has officially launched the Governors Ending Malaria (GEM) Coalition in a move aimed at accelerating national efforts to eliminate malaria by 2035. The signing ceremony, held in recently Port Moresby, brought together senior political leaders including Minister for Health Elias Kapavore, Member of Parliament for Dei Desmond Paul Kipa, and governors from several high-burden provinces including Ramsey Pariwa, Gary Juffa, and Sasindran Muthuvel. The GEM Coalition was first proposed at the Provincial Leaders’ Forum during the 8th Asia Pacific Leaders’ Summit on Malaria Elimination in 2024. It brought together nine provinces including West New Britain, East New Britain, East Sepik, West Sepik, New Ireland, Milne Bay, Madang, Morobe, and Northern Province, which collectively account for approximately 86% of PNG’s malaria burden. Minister Kapavore said the coalition marks a turning point in the country’s public health response. “Malaria is not a burden we must accept forever. Many countries have eliminated malaria; Papua New Guinea can do the same,” he said, stressing that provincial leadership will be critical to driving results on the ground. Under the new framework, provincial governments will take a leading role in coordinating malaria control activities, improving community engagement, and strengthening domestic resource mobilization. The approach is designed to move away from a uniform national strategy toward locally tailored interventions based on disease patterns in each district. Meanwhile, Oro Governor Gary Juffa called for stronger collaboration between government, development partners, and the private sector, urging businesses to contribute expertise and resources in addition to funding. He also emphasized the importance of evidence-based interventions supported by international health agencies. West New Britain Governor Sasindran Muthuvel also shared similar sentiments that provinces must take urgent and decisive action to protect communities, pledging stronger engagement and intensified local efforts to reduce infection rates. Alongside the coalition launch on the May 26th, the National Department of Health (NDoH) also unveiled the National Strategic Plan for Malaria 2026-2030, which outlines a five-year roadmap focused on equity, strengthened health systems, and community-driven implementation. The plan aims to improve targeted responses using epidemiological data and WHO-recommended strategies. Minister Kapavore said the updated strategy represents a shift toward a more localized and evidence-based model. “We will adopt World health Organization (WHO)-recommended approaches and match interventions to the specific malaria burden of each district,” he said, adding that the goal is to maximize the impact of every Kina spent. The government has committed PGK16.7 million toward malaria drugs and essential supplies, while the Global Fund will contribute an additional USD32 million over the next four years. However, officials acknowledged that funding gaps remain and called for stronger support from development partners and provincial administrations. With renewed political commitment, increased financing, and a coordinated provincial-led strategy, Papua New Guinea has set an ambitious course to eliminate malaria as a public health threat by 2035.

Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the School of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Glen Mola, says the overcrowding situation at the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) maternity ward, may continue indefinitely unless urgent action is taken to expand facilities and strengthen family planning programs. Professor Mola said one of the main causes of the growing pressure on maternity services is the increasing inward migration of young people into the National Capital District (NCD) from other parts of Papua New Guinea, particularly Bela in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands and Enga province. He said the rising population has placed enormous strain on the hospital’s maternity ward and frontline healthcare workers. When asked how long the crisis situation could continue, Professor Mola said, “It will continue indefinitely.” He stressed that immediate intervention is needed from both the government and hospital management to reduce overcrowding, including the construction of additional maternity wards. Professor Mola confirmed that there are plans underway to expand maternity services at PMGH and revealed that the Prime Minister has offered funding support for an additional maternity ward to be called the “Mama Ward”. He also warned that overcrowding in maternity wards creates serious health risks for both mothers and babies. “Deadly, especially the serious spread of infections,” Professor Mola said. Professor Mola encouraged ordinary citizens to support overworked doctors and midwives by practicing family planning and delaying pregnancy where possible. He recommended contraceptive implants as one of the most effective family planning methods for women and couples in the NCD and the wider community at this time. For women who are already pregnant and unable to afford private healthcare, Professor Mola has advised them to seek antenatal care as early as possible. He also encouraged couples who already have two children, to consider permanent family planning methods such as tubal ligation or vasectomy. Looking at long-term solutions, Professor Mola stated that stronger awareness on planned pregnancies and smaller family sizes is needed to prevent similar situations in the future. “Plan every pregnancy and limit family size to two.” Professor Mola added that the Health Department has responded to concerns he raised earlier this year and called on policymakers to continue supporting women’s health specialist doctors and midwives working on the frontline of maternal healthcare.

Former NRL hooker Andrew McCullough has urged young athletes in Gulf province to stay disciplined, consistent, and self-motivated as they pursue sporting and personal goals. McCullough delivered the message during a sports development and motivational visit organised by the Gulf Province Sports Trust (GPST), an initiative aimed at strengthening youth participation across rugby league, rugby union, netball, and athletics. A 61-year-old pastor from Papua New Guinea has arrived in Australia to begin an ambitious 7, 800-kilometre cycling journey aimed at spreading the Christian Gospel across the continent.Pastor Laio Poka from Vabukori Village in Central Province, touched down in Brisbane this week to launch what he describes as a spiritual mission inspired by biblical teachings and years of prison ministry work in Papua New Guinea. Pastor Poka previously completed a nationwide outreach effort in PNG, cycling across the country while ministering in all 21 correctional institutions. His latest journey will take him through major Australian regions and remote outback communities as he shares messages of faith and hope. He said the mission is rooted in the biblical passages Matthew 24:14 and Matthew 28:18–20, which call for the Gospel to be preached to all nations. “This is not about sport or adventure,” Pastor Poka said. “It is about taking the Gospel of the Kingdom to the nations. From the rugged highlands of Papua New Guinea to the vast Australian interior, Pastor Poka said his message remains unchanged: “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” The Australian leg of the journey is expected to be followed by a mission across New Zealand as part of his broader international outreach vision. Late Daniel’s younger sister, Sarah Bilip, will represent him this Saturday, May 23rd, at the 20th Yumi FM PNG Musik Awards at the Lamana Gold Club in Port Moresby. She travelled all the way from Laiagam, Enga Province, to witness the special moment on behalf of her family. As Sarah stepped forward to receive Daniel’s official invitation to the awards night, emotions swept through the room. For many in attendance, it was more than just another awards ceremony — it was a tribute to a man whose music touched thousands of lives across the country. “My late brother got nominated for three categories,” Sarah said quietly, holding back emotion. “The first one is Song of the Year 2024, the second is International Song of the Year 2024, and the third is Male Artist of the Year 2024.” Fighting through grief, Sarah thanked Papua New Guineans for continuing to support Daniel’s music even after his passing. “I just want to say thank you to the fans and to Papua New Guinea for your endless support and love towards my brother,” she said.
