PNG HEKARI FC SECURES WIN OVER SOUTH MELBOURNE
A stoppage-time winner has secured PNG Hekari FC a hard-fought 2–1 victory over second-placed South Melbourne FC in Ba, Fiji, marking their second win of the OFC Pro League campaign.
In their final regular season match of the competition, Jerry Allen’s side were determined to end their Fiji stint on a positive note. South Melbourne, meanwhile, were aiming for a win to strengthen their position in the top two, with South Island United closing in just behind.
Under sweltering conditions in Ba, the match burst into life early. In the 7th minute, South Melbourne’s Alex Menelaou was shown a red card following a VAR review, reducing the Australian side to ten men. Just a minute later, PNG Hekari capitalized, with Lekima Gonerau unleashing a stunning long-range strike to open the scoring in the 8th minute.
Despite the setback, South Melbourne responded with sustained pressure, dominating possession and testing goalkeeper Jake Charlston. Ishveer Singh came close with a curling effort from open play, while Aaron Cocks fired over from distance as they searched for an equalizer before halftime.
The visitors made three changes at the break, a move that paid off in the 58th minute when substitute Marco Jankovic levelled the score. He rose highest to meet a corner, heading home to bring South Melbourne back into the contest.
Both teams pushed for a winner in an open second half. PNG Hekari’s Logan Biwa nearly restored the lead on the counterattack but saw his shot drift wide, with the offside flag also coming to his rescue. At the other end, South Melbourne continued to threaten, forcing several strong saves from goalkeeper Biasu.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, PNG Hekari struck in stoppage time. Substitute Ati Kepo produced a composed finish after breaking through the defence and rounding the keeper, sealing a dramatic late victory for his side.
The result gives PNG Hekari their second win of the OFC Pro League and momentum heading into their Challengers Group campaign in New Zealand. South Melbourne remain on 23 points and will face Tahiti United in their final fixture in Fiji before the league split.
South Melbourne FC: 1 (Marco JANKOVIC 58')
PNG Hekari FC: 2 (Lekima GONERAU 7’, Ati KEPO 90+1')

PM WELCOMES EFFORTS TO ENHANCE PNG- JAPAN TRADE
Prime Minister (PM) James Marape has welcomed efforts to enhance trade and connectivity between Japan and Papua New Guinea (PNG), including the anticipated expansion of direct shipping and air links.
The PM expressed his appreciation for this effort during a high-level discussions with Mr. Matsuoka Hideaki, the outgoing Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency; Mr. Shirouzu Kenichi, Incoming Chief Representative of JICA; and His Excellency Hisanobu Mochizuki, Ambassador of Japan to PNG.
“We are a country open for business,” he said. “There is significant potential for growth in trade, investment, and value-added manufacturing between our two nations.”

“With our abundant natural resources — especially hydro, geothermal, and solar — Papua New Guinea has the potential to become a major supplier of clean energy,” he said.
“I invite Japanese companies and research institutions to partner with us in developing battery technology and energy storage solutions. Instead of traditional energy exports, we can explore new frontiers where clean energy is generated here and exported through advanced storage systems.”
Prime Minister Marape concluded by reaffirming the mutual respect and shared vision that underpin PNG– Japan relations.
“Japan has never imposed itself on Papua New Guinea but has walked alongside us as a genuine partner in development,” he said. “Together, we can build a future based on innovation, sustainability, and shared prosperity.”

PM PLEDGES FULL SUPPORT FOR CYCLONE DEVASTATED MILNE BAY ISLANDS
Prime Minister James Marape has reaffirmed the National Government’s full support for relief, recovery and long-term rebuilding in Milne Bay Province following the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Maila.Speaking after meeting with provincial leaders and disaster officials in Alotau, Marape said the Government stands in solidarity with affected communities.
“Milne Bay was directly in the cyclone path, with some areas experiencing prolonged impact from the eye of the storm,” he said. “This is one of the most severe weather events our country has faced, and many especially in the outer islands, are enduring extreme hardship.”
The Government has released K5 million in emergency relief funding for the province, with an additional K1 million allocated to each of the four districts.
“This support will address urgent needs such as food, water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter,” Marape said. “Our response must be swift, coordinated and ensure no community is left behind.”
National resources have already been deployed, including PNG Defence Force patrol boats, helicopter support for aerial operations and coordination through the National Disaster Centre with partners such as the United Nations and the Australian Government.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenge of reaching remote island communities, which make up most of Milne Bay’s population.
“Access is difficult, but our responsibility is clear. Within the next week, we aim to reach all affected areas by sea or air,” he said.
Marape also indicated he plans to visit some of the worst-affected islands.
“I want to stand with our people on the ground and assure them that help is here and more is coming.”
He said recovery efforts will extend beyond immediate relief to rebuilding homes, schools, and health facilities, with a focus on resilience.
“We must rebuild stronger and smarter. Climate change is real, and our coastal and island communities are on the front line,” he said.
A preliminary report will be presented to Cabinet next week to guide further recovery and funding measures.
Marape praised the people of Milne Bay for their contributions to the country, saying the nation stands united with them.
“For generations, Milne Bay has contributed greatly to Papua New Guinea. Today, the whole country stands with you,” he said.
“You are not alone. Together, we will respond, recover and rebuild.”

HUNTERS LEAD STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE IN A NEW INITIATIVE
Papua New Guinea’s beloved SP PNG Hunters are stepping beyond the rugby league field to deliver a powerful message off it, launching a dedicated Anti-Violence Round in partnership with the South Pacific Brewery’s flagship brand, the SP Lager in Port Moresby. The initiative will take centre stage this Saturday, 18th April 2026, when the Hunters face the Ipswich Jets at the National Football Stadium, using one of the country’s biggest sporting platforms to spark conversations around respect, safety, and stronger communities.Backed by South Pacific Brewery’s flagship brand SP Lager, the campaign reinforces a long-standing partnership with the Hunters that dates back to 2013—now focused on tackling one of the nation’s most pressing social issues, domestic violence.
For the match, the Hunters will wear special edition jerseys emblazoned with the campaign’s key messages- "Join the Generation of Change” and “No Excuse for Domestic Violence,” turning the game into more than just a contest—it becomes a call to action.
Speaking at the launch, SP Lager Brand Manager Kitione Amet said the initiative aims to keep the conversation around domestic violence visible and active across communities.
“Rugby league has an unmatched ability to unite families and communities,” Amet said. “Through this partnership with the SP PNG Hunters, we’re using that reach to drive awareness, encourage positive behaviour, and promote meaningful change.”
SP PNG Hunters coach and campaign ambassador Paul Aiton echoed the message, highlighting the club’s core values of faith, family and football, as central to the cause.
“These values guide how we play, how we lead, and how we live,” Aiton said.“That’s why we’re proud to stand with SP Lager and use our platform to help drive real change.”He added that the message behind the round is simple but critical.
“Violence has no place in our families, our game, or our country. As Hunters, we want to lead by example—speaking out, supporting awareness, and encouraging safer choices in our communities.”
The Anti-Violence Round reflects a growing recognition of sport’s role in shaping social attitudes in Papua New Guinea, with the Hunters once again demonstrating their influence far beyond the scoreboard.
As the team prepares to run out in front of a home crowd this weekend, the message will be clear: this is more than rugby league—it’s a united stand for change.
